Small Actions, Big Impact: Solutions to Help Our Waterways

April 18, 2026 12:13 am

Every drop of rain that falls on your yard, driveway, or street eventually flows into our local waterways — untreated. That means whatever it picks up along the way goes with it. The good news? A few small changes to everyday habits can make a real difference for our bayous, neighborhoods, and wildlife.

Smarter Lawn Care

Fertilizers and pesticides are useful in the right amounts, but too much ends up washed into stormwater after the next rain. Those extra nutrients can harm aquatic life and feed algae blooms downstream. Apply only what your lawn actually needs, follow label instructions, and avoid spreading before heavy rain is in the forecast.

Clean Up Pet Waste

Pet waste isn't just unpleasant — it carries bacteria that washes straight into our waterways when it rains. Always scoop it, bag it, and throw it in the trash. Keeping a supply of bags by the door makes it easy to stay consistent on every walk.

Lawn Debris & Storm Drains

Grass clippings, leaves, and yard waste may look harmless in the street, but they clog storm drains, cause localized flooding, and load our waterbodies with nutrients that fuel algae. Bag yard waste, compost it, or mulch it back into your lawn. Never blow or rake it into the street or gutter.

Prevent Illegal Dumping & Trash

Storm drains are not trash cans. Never pour oil, paint, cleaning products, or chemicals down a drain — they flow directly, untreated, into nearby creeks and bayous. Montgomery County offers household hazardous waste disposal options for materials that need special handling.
